NASTY WOMEN
March 3, 2017 This is a group exhibition that serves to demonstrate solidarity among artists who identify with being a Nasty Woman in the face of threats to roll back women’s rights, individual rights, and abortion rights. In this way each work will represent its own unique voice while being unified by the overall installation. It is the hope that this installation will create a strong visual statement of solidarity. Blue Reflections
August 24, 2016 The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a place of self-discovery – it is a place where beliefs are questioned, boundaries are pushed, and perspectives are altered. As artists, we often use our work as a medium to flesh out who we are and what is important to us. All art is to some degree influenced by the atmosphere it is created in – in this case Carolina’s beautiful campus. For UNC’s Week of Welcome and the art department’s Tar Heel Art Takeover, SAMple gallery wants to give new and prospective students a glimpse of what they’re in for, and how the Carolina experience will shape their identity. Contributing Artists: Brenda Miller Holmes, Caroline Reed, Tracie Hayes, and David Wright |
Fracture by Charlie Wilcher
March 26th, 2015 Fracture was a selection of works by senior studio art major Charlie Wilcher consisting of scenes set within alternate realities and abstracted interpretations of the future. A recurring theme throughout the collection is the artist’s efforts to analyze humanity’s influence on the environment. The work is also an intellectual space for the artist to ponder the influences of technology on both people and their environments. Included in the show was a video piece featuring some of Charlie’s numerous digital works and film photography. Also on display was a prototype of the artist’s card game Most Glorious Comrade. Charlie (art/visual design) and Eugene Shenderov (game design) are co-founders of the company This and That Games. |
Reflected Gaze by Ginny Niver and Aleah Howell
January 23, 2015 "Reflected Gaze" is a compilation of introspective work produced by Ginny Niver and Aleah Howell. Artists and friends, Howell and Niver ask a simple yet eternal question: "How does one perceive one's self?" Living in a world dominated by the selfie, the artists question the practice of myth and portraiture by reflecting on how the construction of the female identity is affected by contemporary culture. |

Coming In
February 20, 2014 What is queer art? While that may seem like an intimidating question to ask since both "queer" and "art" are fluid and ambiguous terms by themselves, perhaps the benefit of thinking about what they mean together makes it easier to unpack their individual meanings. "Coming In" is structured around contemplating this question while exploring the visual strategies employed by artists today. Including work by: Andy Champion, Marta Glenn, Rachel Johnson, Ariel Li, Bill Pappas, Amy Parlier, Gray Swartzel. |
